More than Dr Rama Subbiah’s remarkable contributions to academic research, the prolific writer was also known for his deep interest in the welfare of the underprivileged and finding solutions for them.
The academician informally started the Indian Students Scholarship Fund in 1967 – believed to be the first crowdfunding of its kind then – to help poverty-stricken Indian varsity students.
Thanks to the fund, which was formalised in 1969 and later renamed the Rama Subbiah Scholarship Fund (DRSSF), more than 2,000 students have since been able to complete their education.

DRSSF grants educational study loans to deserving students who are financially disadvantaged and currently enrolled in tertiary educational institutions. These study loans are repayable through monthly instalments commencing from a month after the study loan cheque is awarded. It is the policy of the FUND that study loan cheques are only made out to the tertiary educational institution where the student is enrolled. Each application for a study loan is considered on its own merit and shortlisted applicants are required to attend an interview to present their case; the FUND reserves the right to approve/decline any application without assigning any reason for such a decision.
